The 1st round of the Kortchnoi Master Open saw a big number of wins and almost all favorites succeeded in solving their task to beat the lower rated opponents - but the number one of the seeding list, Latvian Grandmaster Alexei Shirov, stumbled and only managed to draw against the Austrian player Patrick Reinwald, who is rated more than 500 points less. Another contender for 1st place, the Dutch Grandmaster Loek van Wely, even came close to defeat against the German Ulrich Zenker. In a closed Sicilian, van Wely underestimated Zenker's attack on the kingside and took a poisoned pawn that eventually cost him an entire queen for only a rook. However, with his clock running down, the German unnecessarily returned some material and thus lifted van Wely into the driver's seat again.
Today's 2nd round will feature the first Grandmaster encounters on the top boards. We will be broadcasting live from 11:00 pm on our live site.
